Forty-Five Years Ago Today

May 4, 1970, Kent State University, Kent, Ohio, U.S.A.

Dear Lord, I almost forgot! The date, that is—the events, never. Watching this, my eyes filled with tears, after all this time. In the context of what’s shown in this video, the preceding post might make more sense to some. This is what it was all about. If you don’t get this, you don’t get anything. But the history is mostly “vanished” now. Back then it was a terrible shock that national guardsmen had shot down four students in cold blood on their own campus. Now cops kill people everywhere, all the time.

How did you find that? Never knew it even existed. Poor Beach Boys. I was going to say, “You had to be there,” but they were and didn’t get it. Haven’t listened. Do I have to? 🙂

You’re probably aware of the Pentagon’s $65 million attempt to re-write the history of the Vietnam War on the 50th Anniversary of its beginning. Check out the website, http://vietnamfulldisclosure.org/. Also,a book that tells the real story of Vietnam, “Kill Anything That Moves: The Real American War in Vietnam” by Nick Turse.
Veterans For Peace, http://www.veteransforpeace.org, is encouraging its members to write letters of remembrance to veterans on the Wall. These letters will be delivered to the Wall. Veterans in attendance will then walk the wall beginning at the first soldier that was killed and finishing with the last. They will then continue on to commemorate the even greater number who lost their lives from war-related injuries, including suicides. The walk will continue to commemorate the approximately 6 million Southeast Asian lives lost. Using the same fallen per meter calculation as the Wall does, the walk will continue for another 4.8 miles.

I remember it, John. I can’t think of it without Walter Cronkite’s voice ringing in my ears. Unthinkable, unimaginable, but there we were. Of course there was My Lai still fresh in our minds. That was different being on foreign soil and all. Selma before that. If there wasn’t a movie fresh off the camera it would barely come to mind except for history books and the History channel.
Some of us have never really forgotten though because it’s our history. We’ve mourned and moved on but never forgotten forgotten. Two words and Walter Cronkite is resurrected on the evening news.
    It’s different today,
Since Kent State there have been over 250 school related shootings. Did anyone know that? I didn’t, I had to research it. Two-hundred and fifty. How many can we name? Combine, of course; then there was Sandy Hook and…um, uh…?
What was a unthinkable has become commonplace. Before too many more years have passed we’ll have forgotten – if we ever even knew at all.
