See the most perfect old cat sitting in the sun. She is always in the sun. See the photons and the ultraviolet radiation keeping her alive. You know what that means, don’t you. She is of this space and it sustains her. One with the old adobe where the kitchen plaster fell down Monday, one with the pack rats that hid her kibble in my boot. I just found that today but doubt it’s fresh. Tell me I’m not living through this just so I can write about it. What would happen if I wrote about a beach?

There seems to be a stuckness going on in general. Especially housing. For instance, I am stuck in Puna, Hawaii. For now I sleep in the rental car until my truck arrives in one more week. Friends help out. Every day I search craigslist, I call, I email, I text and still nothing. But it is warm. Rainy, but that is ok. I am tired of being cold so I hope to finish my life here, even if it means getting a real job, if that is possible.
My daughter and the kids are gradually healing from the bad stepmother. We are not going back.
Warm would be nice. I’ve been thinking more about that as we head into single-digits next week. But wow, you’re in Hawaii. I’ve never experienced that kind of environment. Not big on crowds or humidity, but Something Different would be so welcome. Good news about your daughter. That earlier business was awful.
By the way, I have a feeling Callie will be fine in nicer housing. And you can write about that. It just needs a sunny window. This is your year to find it. Surely.
Surely!
I love your old cat. I love all cats. I can’t say that about people.
I don’t love all cats… Many years ago in Austin a couple I knew had a cat named El Gato Meow. She was vicious, always biting. One night the husband, another friend, and I drove to the other side of town with El Gato Meow and just let her out! The very idea seems so cruel to me now, and I can’t believe we did that. Made sense at the time, however. It was like living with a rabid weasel.
People, now, I’m getting a little better with. Whatever the cause, this has got to be a good sign.
Somebody made that cat that way.
No doubt!
You are not even close to being done John. You are one for the ages. This has just been the warmup.
Hey, thanks. The warmup! That’s exactly what it feels like. Nice framing, too.
P.S. Read the warmup part to me wife and got “the look.” But then she laughed.
