Bird City

downy woodpecker

Nice of this downy woodpecker to pose like that

Man, do we have the birds. (I know, there’s just this one here.) This afternoon there must have been two dozen bushtits on that same suet feeder; it reminded me of those old African nature movies where you see a hundred giant vultures strip a zebra carcass. Hmm. Actually, I think you have to be like 150 years old to remember those from black & white TV, or newsreels at the matinee. My God, I remember newsreels! Ack!

Don’t everybody jump in here all at once, now.

Dang. I miss those days. I think about it a lot lately.

Love those winter birds! We have downies here in the Boston area. Hairy Woodpeckers, too. Always on the suet. And this winter, a pair of Carolina wren’s are living in the woodpile on the front porch and eating suet. I’ve been trying to figure out whether to get some mealy worms and put them out, frozen or not. Doves, bluejays, chickadees, nuthatches, juncos, and titmice, my favorites. The cat does a lot of birdwatching from her perch on the kitchen window. We don’t have bushtits or any “Western” birds, alas.

Yeah, I remember those too. Newsreels and cartoons before the main feature (There were often two shows) at fancy movie theaters for a buck twenty five. Three of them along Seventh Street in downtown Ft. Worth back when Ft. Worth was still a nice place. The Palace, Hollywood and Worth theaters. That was when WWII and Korea were still fresh on people’s minds.

OK I’ll get off but you started it.

My kids call me crazy for feeding the birds. Hey, I like looking out the kitchen window while I’m doing the dishes and watching them feed. This year I have a lot of cardinals, robins, and a cute little yellow and grey bird. Doves are eating off the ground. Never had so many here either. It makes me happy! So, I will keep feeding them. Now, those scary old blackbirds, I am not so fond. It makes me laugh to see the squirrels hang upside down to try to get a snack from the squirrel proof feeder. I guess we are easily amused. Yes back in the old days, it seemed that there was something actually worth watching on the TV. Not now!
