Season of the Rufous

rufous hummingbird

Shot through dirty window with Pentax K-x on auto w/ 55-300 telephoto lens, tweaked like crazy (chrome , Camera RAW filters)

They’re here! We have so many of them now. Rufous hummingbirds are very aggressive, chasing each other and every other kind away from the feeders and even out of the yard. I put up five feeders. With the crowds we get, some of them are empty by the end of the day.

Wow! Where are they arriving from?

Oh geez. You’re going to make me look it up, aren’t you. 🙂 We have four different kinds here: black-chinned, broadtailed, rufous, and the tiny Costa’s hummingbird. The latter is rare, but every now and then I see one. They all come and go in waves from their respective breeding and wintering habitats, and I couldn’t begin to tell you even which direction they’re heading! Isn’t that terrible? But the rufouses always show up about this time.

Anna hummers exhibit the same aggressive behavior. I once read somewhere (National Geographic?) that if hummers were the size of blackbirds, it wouldn’t be safe for humans to walk in their habitat 🙂

No kidding. They zoom by so close outside, I’ve felt a tiny bit of wind.

Just a temporary fill-in. The post had to go away for a while. It’s back now.
