HORSE FLY? Yep. The history of this Taos publication is worth a Google search. Originally published by Spud Johnson from 1938-1939 (a single-sheet subheaded "The Smallest and Most Inadequate Newspaper in the World"), Horse Fly is now a monthly publication for Taos, NM and the communities between here and Santa Fe. When I was living in San Cristobal, publisher Bill Whaley once wanted me to report on the news from nearby Questa but then decided it was too dangerous. Something about heroin dealers and a snoopy Anglo emigrant, no doubt.
Here's the logo from the Web site. The online side of the paper needs help, and some would say the other side too. Don't believe them! This is Taos, after all. If everything worked perfectly, where would we then? West Des Moines or Stuttgart, maybe. Bah!
But off and on — now mostly on — I've written a monthly column for the paper. Originally titled "El Emigrante," the columns now get by on my byline, and occasionally I pack a few of them into a book or ebook (there's a free ebook of four Horse Fly columns here). I've also included three good examples into a clips file you can view or download here (PDF, 72 KB). Others are available as part of the photo-illustrated Holy Fire Journal ebook collection, and I hope to republish all of them soon in paperback. Enjoy! -- JHF
